I began studying the Virtues Project because I was searching for new ways to interact with my students. I had a student who would cry every time she would make a mistake. Nothing I could say would help. I would reason with her about how making mistakes is natural, that perfection can't be attained on the first few tries, that even a baby doesn't walk perfectly the very first time, etc.... Nothing I said ever helped. She would make a mistake, and CRY.
I took the online Virtues Project training (wonderful format!) and it radically changed the way I teach my students! The approach is to always see the virtues the student is displaying, and to let them know the virtue they possess in relation to a particular action they did or a behaviour they displayed. Upon returning to my crying student, I realised that she was very attentive. She noticed she made a mistake (which not all students are able to do!). And so, at our next lesson, she came in, played her song and made a mistake. I immediately praised for her attentiveness in noticing. Her eyes opened wide and she was startled! She never cried again.
That was 10 years ago. I have been using the language of the virtues in my lessons all the time, and the difference in how the students approach their lessons and their learnings is just mind-boggling.
